What have I been up to…

yes I have been a bit absent, it’s been busy, as life tends to be.

I went to a wedding and a funeral in the one week, a surreal experience going through the happiest and saddest of emotions in such a short space of time.

But I also managed a bit of crochet therapy.

Firstly I have been making these super cute baby beanies!

Baby Gumnut Beanies

Baby Gumnut Beanies

The idea originally was to make one for my soon to be niece or nephew but the pattern (which can be found here) is for preemie babies and does not increase well to a newborn size, so there was a lot of experimenting.

This is how i did the pattern (Aussie/UK terms):

Using 8ply and a 6mm hook, I started with the stem – in the above pattern this is made separately and joined later.

Magic circle, 2 chains, 5 DC into the magic circle. join

rows 2-5: 1 chain, DC around and join (5)

row 6: 1 chain, 4 DC into first 4 stitichs, 2 DC into next stitch, join (6)

row 7: 1 chain, 2DC into each stitch, join (12)

row 8: 2 chain, 2 Treble into each stitch, join (24)

row 9: 2 chain, *2 treble, 1 treble* repeat around and join (36)

row 10: 1 chain, *2DC, 1DC into next 8* repeat around and join (40)

row 11: 2 chain, puff stitch into every second stitch – please youtube or google this

row 12-18: 2 chain, puff stitch into each space around and join.

row 19-20: 1 chain, DC around and join.

Tie off – I prefer to leave all ends long and use a darning needle to weave the ends in.

I also made this…

*

This was a lovely jumper that had a couple of tears starting in the seams

*

I cut off the sleeves as that is where the worse rips were

*

and I took in the side seams, partly to help with the seam integrity and partly because it always was a bit of a floppy jumper

*

a bit of hemming on the arm holes too

*

very happy with the result and wore it to work a couple of times.

*

It’s lovely quality, cotton and a little bit of glitter through the edges

Square Swapping!!

Square Swapping!!

I also joined a crochet block swapping group!

I had been turned off by another I joined before I even started thanks to all the negative comments with people stating they had send heaps and only received a few back. No I don’t have time to make and send heaps and this group had nothing to control who sent to who for an even swap.

so I joined a once a month swap where you do not even need to participate each month and you are designated a partner. You can also suggest colour choices.

I chose blue, orange, silver and purple for my girl and was very happy with my squares!!

I made a pink and purple and a rainbow square for my partners and have eagerly joined up for a third! I also made one square myself so the resulting blanket has one square from Mummy (bottom right)

I’m worried my crocheting days are number.. well until next winter. today we had a 29C day, not bad for the 2nd week of spring! but I will soldier along! In fact I have purchased some cotton yarn from Bendigo Woollen Mills to stretch out my crocheting days for as long as possible!

Happy hooking!

Crochet Amigurumi Tea Cup

I made this today – Crochet Amigurumi Tea Cup

After some not very subtle hinting from my Mum I made my first Amigurumi project today! Mum send my a Pin on Pinterest with the oh so subtle comment “hint hint”. As I’m on a bit of a family crochet gifting theme and it’s her birthday soon – shh don’t tell…

I used this free Lion Brand pattern and add the embellishments from the hint hint picture.

We had a girls day as hubby was at work, and it was a beautiful Sunny Winters Day.

We also did coffee and Gelato followed by some playing in the fountain…

which led to, some op shopping for a dry size 4 top….

followed by some sitting on a mat in the sun on the grass, crocheting, playing with Robo Poli cars and picking dandelions.

I hope Mum likes it and is OK with my firsts ever Crochet Amigurumi and its little faults… It’s a bit lop-sided and I’m thinking the saucer should have been the other way up….

This one can be used as a pin cushion, my Mum is a sewer, I put rice in the bottom and ripped open an old pillow (go the upcycle) to stuff the top.

Amigurumi wasn’t as fiddly as I thought, though this is quite a big Amigurumi, and it has made me quite keen to try another one, maybe for the upcoming niece/nephew…

Have you tried amigurumi? Any amigurumi hints and tips?

Last minute Beret for Z

I made all of this! Crochet Stash busting and family warming.

You may have noticed a bit of crocheting for my nieces lately, well it’s all ready to ship but I thought I’d show it off first!!

The ribbed mittens have already been expressed down, as miss Z was very cold in her new cold climate and mittens small enough were proving hard to find.

I made her a beanie as well

And then I made this random snoodie…

Not sure who that’s going to fit, hopefully miss Z as my sister bought her a set with mittens, scarf and beanie, but they were too big are have gone to miss J.

Purple is her favourite colour

Meanwhile I made miss J these…

In her favourite colour.. Purple

Ribbed Crochet gloves that reminded me of boiled sweets!

I started with a rib and just kept going.

Cos it was purple…

Wearable together without, hopefully, being too over powering.

So just in case, I whipped up one of my signature items from last year…

Last minute Beret for Z

Last minute Beret for Z

This took me less then 2 hours to whip up! I’m really hoping it fits, but I’m pretty confident as I’ve had a bit of practice with these. If you are using the hand measuring method of sizing for the beret, you will need to go almost double the hand size and then come back in to the right width. I count how many rows I’ve gone past the beanie size and then bring it back in that many rows…

So.. minus the pink mittens, here is the final shipment!

Shipment for nieces

Shipment for nieces

Hopefully this will get them though the cold winter and I can make some more for the older one next year and “hand-me-down” from mine to the younger one.

I was hoping to do some serious yarn busting with this project, but it doesn’t look any smaller… baby and Toddler hats just don’t take up much yarn!

Now I should really fit some study in before making an Infinity Scarf for my sister, hoping to barter it with one of her amazing prints!

KEEP CALM CRAFT ON {CRAFTING ON}

Made these today

Last year a friend sent me this:

Knit Grape booties

and asked if I could make them. And I said No… I don’t knit, but I could make these:

Crochet Chilli Elf Booties

And she said yes! So I did.

First a practice run:

practise booties in purple

Then the real thing:

My Crochet Elf Booties

I think I prefer the purple colour, but not the yarn, and I used this pattern, mostly. The red yarn is 5ply wool crepe, which my Mum had told was really lovely to work with, and as Mum’s tend to be, she was right!

They are super cute, soft and stretchy and if anyone wants a pair please message me or see my Etsy page.

CROCHET CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR EVERYONE!!

I want to make a slouchy hat for my brother in law for Christmas – yes all my extended family are getting crocheted goods this year… – and this one seems quite simple, if I’m going to make a beanie for a guy I think it should be simple. I don’t think he needs the diamond brooch

I’m thinking of making string baskets for others…
A string basket in the making, I’m keeping this one for my yarn!
I’ve just made this up, just crocheted a square and then stopped increasing once it is the desired width. could do round, hexagon or anything really.
I plan on blogging the whole process, so keep an eye out for that.
No tutorial as it’s from Etsy

and maybe some string wine bottle carriers…

I cannot find a pattern like this for free, but I’m sure I can figure something out. I’m sure there’s a wine bottle about to use as a size guide…

Cotton String is great, a bit harder to work with but a great result. It’s cheap and clean.
This cover is a bit simpler, it would be easier to figure out.
Any bag would work really, and I guess cotton would stain easy and not wash well. But it would look good at first 😉  !!
Would you be happy receiving these gifts?
